Cantey Hanger Attorney to Assist National Lung Cancer Organizations

Law Firm: Cantey Hanger, LLP

FORT WORTH, Texas (July 12, 2010) – Charles Florsheim, a Partner with the Cantey Hanger law firm, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Lung Cancer Partnership and selected a Patient Advocate to the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group.

Florsheim, who never has smoked, is a lung cancer survivor. Earlier this year, he was named a consumer reviewer for the Lung Cancer Research Program, a federal initiative administered by the Department of Defense.

The National Lung Cancer Partnership is a group of leading doctors, researchers, patient advocates and lung cancer survivors who are working together to improve treatments for lung cancer patients. Its goals are to raise public awareness of the disease and generate funding for lung cancer research.

The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performs multi-center cancer clinical trials. The cooperative consists of a large network of researchers, physicians and health care professionals at public and private institutions across the country. Funded primarily by the National Cancer Institute, ECOG has evolved into one of the largest clinical cancer research organizations in the U.S. with nearly 6,000 physicians, nurses, pharmacists, statisticians and clinical research associates.

“When I was diagnosed with lung cancer, I learned that while tremendous progress has been made in detecting and treating many of the deadliest cancers during the last two decades, little progress has been made with regard to lung cancer,” Florsheim said. “Though it is the No. 1 cancer killer in our nation, lung cancer often is overlooked because of the stigma of smoking attached to it. While funding for breast, prostate and colorectal cancer research has grown tremendously, there has been no corresponding growth for lung cancer research. Lung cancer kills more people per year than those three cancers combined.

“I am determined to do what I can to raise awareness regarding this deadly disease and work in support of more effective detection, treatment and, hopefully, a cure.”
